  • I'm going to go through a very important thing for you to understand and that's email customization. And what I mean by email customization is obviously we're sending emails in convert kit with an email service provider to many people at once. It's not just to one person. So when we think of things like customizations, what I mean is like the greeting as an example.
  • So hello Carson. Now, obviously when we send a broadcast email is, you know, it's going to, whoever you specify it to go to, but certainly we don't want to have to, we're not a, you can't even customize by their name individually like that. So what do you do you tap into convert kids, email customization.
  • I'll show you how to do that. Okay. So let's just take a very common use case for the greeting. Now, one thing that's great about convert kit. I'm just in a normal broadcast here, and you'd see this plus sign. You'll see this hurt the email editors and throat convert kit overall actually in creating landing pages and sequences and incentive emails and all that.
  • And you look for this and this is where you can add certain things. And you can see all the various things that can work. It allows you to add videos, layouts, pictures, social links, a whole bunch of different things, but let's just look at personalization. So if I open this up, they really have some really handy snippets here for you.
  • So inputting a subscriber's first name. Okay. So I'll put the supplier's first. Personalized greeting. So this includes a greeting if the name exists, because not everybody in your, on your email list may have a name associated with their account. So this is an interesting thing that I'll show you right away here.
  • You can also include people's email addresses if that's needed, you know, if something more advanced as conditional tags, which I'll get to in a moment. So let's start simple. You let's just start with this subscriber first name, so you can see that it just enters this little. Thing con con Snippet, I guess we'll call it around these curly brackets.
  • And that's how it knows to input that person's name. So convert kit goes through your email and changes this for everybody. And we can show that by even looking at the preview and you can say first name goes here, right? And tier for a subscriber. This is already a Mick. You can see that it actually says what it would input in this case.
  • So I'm previewing it as this particular subscriber and no matter how many subscribers you can do in the preview window. Check them by just searching their name or their email. So that's just handy to see, okay, this is what it's doing to make sure it looks right. We really want to look and use preview a lot when we're doing customizations, especially as we make more advanced customizations.
  • So that's that, that's the first name. Let's close that preview. Now, if I open up that personalization section again, a personalized greeting. This is the one I suggest to you use and look at what it did. It added a few extra things, strip and default. Okay. And I actually want to also add capitalize. So these are Additional add ons that you can have in order to affect this sort of field that you're inputting.
  • Okay. And I'll link below this video to a help article with, from convert kit that goes through all the advanced customizations and all the various options. Cause there's a lot too much to cover, but this is a good, simple example. So now, rather than it just saying, hello, first name, right last time. It's stripping.
  • Okay. Now, so what strip means in this context is it takes away any spacing. So if somebody added like a bunch of spaces at the end or the start of their name, for whatever reason, it just takes that out. So that's just good. So you don't end up with a funny. Capitalize is self-explanatory it's capitalizing and you see these vertical lines.
  • These are called on your keyboard. You'll find them next to the like reverse slash. But in any case, that's, what's used to separate the sort of steps that we want it to take. So take the perverse person's name, strip out any white space. This is just to make sure that we don't ended up with weird spaces, capitalize it just in case it's not.
  • And then if that name doesn't exist, it's a default to there. So let's just say we wanted to be more friendly and let's say our default is friend. And let me just go add a subscriber.
  • Just to show you and I'm not going to include that person the names. So I'll just add myself and you have to take, okay, so now you see, I have two subscribers or my account Carson, me with my name and encarcin without a name. Right. So I'll just go back to my broadcast and show you what this ends up looking like.
  • Okay. Let's click. And you can see it just enters that, but we want to preview as a specific subscriber. So I'm going to do this. And remember it. I said, this person, this does not have a name. So now you can see that for Carson any, and this would be true of anybody, right? That doesn't have a name. This is handling, handling this all in bulk for you.
  • So this one says, hello, friend. But if I change this to my other Carson email, this. You can see that it changes it to hello Carson. Okay. So that's the most basic customization and what's cool is, as I said, convert kit, basically as it built in by hitting the plus sign and then that personalization, and this is the one I suggest you use.
  • You can also use subscribers, tags, conditionally. Okay. And this is more advanced, but I think it's worth saying, so let's just read through this. And make sense of it. So it's surrounded by these brackets and weird stuff. So just maybe ignore that a little bit, but if subscriber tags contains the tag name, and I just happened to know that I have a tag called demo.
  • Okay. So then show this content. This says this subscriber has this tag demo L. The show this content, if the subscriber does not have that tag. Okay. So I just happened to have a, a demo tag in my account, but let's go and let's just remove that tag from one of the subscribers. Okay. And then we'll just be able to see again, using the powerful really awesome and powerful preview feature.
  • So, okay. So. This showing the tag, if they have demo, if not, it's showing not. Okay. So we have one subscriber in my account that will see it on that. Won't so let's do,
  • oops. Okay. So this email has the tag demo. So this is a guy where has the tag. Okay. That's working as expected. That's great. Now what if we switched to buy other person that doesn't have the tag, we should see this content change. The subscriber does not have the text, so that's working as expected and you can do that many times in your email and you can get very fancy and interesting.
  • You can do some really cool things with that, but it is a bit advanced, but I think this shows a pretty simple and straightforward leveraging that. And then of course, anytime your tags change, you do have to update this to match. And that's that. Now something else that you can do is do use these code snippets in subject lines.
  • Now you cannot use the, these, the, if Snippets in subject lines, but you can use name, which I think is really powerful because when you put someone's name, at least in my experience, and I think this is an understood fact in the email marketing world, if you put someone's name in the subject line, they're much more likely to open it.
  • So if I went just, Hey there, and then I'm going to just paste this in. I copied it from here. This will now work. Just as, as it does here, but in the subject line. So even our subject lines are being customized for each person that's receiving the email. So that's really awesome. And really cool preview, doesn't allow you to show that but I assure you that it does in this simple use case.
  • Just this again, not the more complicated customization. Okay. So that concludes the video about how you can customize emails and how it ConvertKit. It makes it easy to do some more advanced things with conditional tagging. And yeah, it's powerful. Yeah.
