  • Hello folks in this video, I want to show you how to add a custom domain to your convert kit account. Adding a custom domain to your account is a really good idea because then you can get away from the, um, maybe uglier, uh, domains that are used by default with convert kit. So if I were to just open a landing page to give you an idea, Um, you can see this link here, this massively human dot C k.page.
  • Um, that's a little bit, it's not too bad truthfully, but it's a little bit ugly and that massively human part of yours is even more strange, like more random. Um, if you go to your account settings and then right here, your account domain, um, right. So massively human.ck.page. That should look familiar from that page.
  • We just on. Okay. Um, you can change that. So to your name, um, my suggestion is to make it as short as possible. Well being descriptive. So it's like Kathleen's for example, on our main one is Kathleen dot C k.page. So that's pretty good. Um, I know Laila's is Lyla dot C k.page, so trying to make it as short as possible, but, um, Either way, that's how you change that.
  • But my point with all of this is to make it, to show you how rather than using like massively human.ck.page, we use a custom domain. So I have one already set up that I did in the past. And this is carson.link. That is a URL. So if I open that up, you can see that this is. A landing page, our warm welcome for our BFS.
  • Actually, if you're wondering, so that's on this link. So rather than it being that like massively human dot C k.page, it's my own custom link. And what's important with custom domains is say you have a website up already. So Kathleen seeley.com. Okay. I do not want to add Kathleen seely.com as a domain into convert kit, because then if I went to Kathleen seeley.com, rather than it going to the main website of hers, it will go to some convert kit page.
  • So that's not what we want. Um, so to avoid that, as you can see here, Actually they explain it really well. Um, convert kit always has really helpful support articles. So if I am not helpful or you just don't. Want to listen to my voice anymore. They actually do a really good job of linking to, um, support articles within, um, their dashboards and stuff.
  • So I always look for their helpful instructions, but also ask me, I always like helping, but just in case, but basically you can say, see, it says you should set up a sub domain unless you want your landing page to take over your top level domain. And that top level domain is like your main website. So you could add your main domain.
  • If you do not have a website, that would be a great idea. So having it just be, I'm just thinking off the top of my head, Carson grady.com. I don't have a main website, so I just want it to be a convert kit, a landing page. That's a great idea. I actually think that. Far less people need a web site, a true website than they think.
  • And they could do be just as productive if not more with, um, only landing pages. Um, but I digress. So let's let me show you how to add a sub domain. So in this example, We use Namecheap as you know, so I have my Carson knows best, um, domain that I've purchased and I don't have a website on Carson knows best.com, but I'm going to pretend like we do.
  • We're going to pretend like it's like Kathleen seeley.com. So basically I cannot, um, use, um, Carson knows best.com. I have to use a sub domain. So in order to do that, what I am going to do is create a sub domain.
  • And in order to do that, we're first going to actually start in convert kit. So I'm going to click add domain, and I'm going to use the sub domain. Um, LP for landing page. Okay. This could be anything. Um, some are go a cop popular one. Um, what else is popular? You know, that might be kind of it, but it theoretically can be anything.
  • Like, for example, we have one that's feedback dot Kathleen seeley.com. Um, so it doesn't have to be necessarily short, but it does have to be one word. Like you can't have a, you can't have a space, obviously you can't have any punctuation, anything like that. Um, So I like to use LP for landing page as a sort of easy one.
  • And then this is the root domain. So it's a LP dot Carson knows best.com. And then it asks you just to select which, um, landing page you want it to be as your homepage. So which one would show up under that? So I'm just going to choose this as my main landing page. Okay. So I'm going to click save. Okay.
  • Then it creates all of these, um, domain records that we need to then create a Namecheap. So I have my name cheap, open and logged in, right. So I'm going to click and I'm and if you have multiple domains, or if you end up just on this page, I'm going to find the domain I want. And then I'm going to click manage, and then I'm going to click advanced DNS.
  • And we're going to add a new record. It's an, a record, as you can see here type is a, the host is LP. So you can see here host L P that is your sub domain. And then these numbers. Are, you can think of them as addresses while you actually just copy paste them. You don't actually have to think of them as anything, but if you're curious, they're basically like street addresses almost if you will.
  • Um, so you can see that a record was added, but we have three total to add. So I want to get this one. Um, copy paste, checkbox. And then the third one, a record LP this last value copy paste check. Okay. So this can take a little bit of time actually. Um, I think I'm just going to leave this real time. Okay. So that was all real time.
  • There was no edit. So that's how fast it worked for me. So if you use Namecheap specifically, your experience should be the same time-wise so if it's longer, maybe something's messed up. Um, so you can see these eight records are now here. And then if I, uh, open this in a new tab, you can see it's LP dot Carson knows best.com.
  • So I'm using a custom domain, but once it connects,
  • here we go. You can see that it is my convert kit landing page. So this is like I said, a convert kit landing page that normally we can even go to that exact page, this one right here. So this should look familiar. This is this page. If I clicked, um, Share before I added the custom domain, it had, uh, uh, you know, the sort of massively human dot C k.page, a longer URL.
  • So that is how you set up a sub domain to use inside of your convert kit account. Um, as far as I know, There is no limit to the amount of custom domains. So that's cool. If you happen to have a bunch, I don't know if there's a limit, I've never tried more than three, I think. But, um, so if that's relevant to you, you could do that.
  • And again, this use of sub domain is important. If your root domain, this main part is already in use because if we just used, um, The root, just this Carson knows best.com. And I had a website there convert kit would sort of take that over. So that's why we use a sub domain and that remains in, uh, keeps this main root domain in town.
  • Right. So you can actually see here, Kathleen seeley.com. Um, and then there's also a landing page ages. So LP, you can see LP dot Kathleen seeley.com. Slash webinar. Uh, this is an old webinar, but you can see that that's in fact what I do using that. So this is not convert kit, but, um, that's besides the point.
  • So I hope that helps. And, um, yeah, this can be a little bit advanced, so feel free to just ask, um, Just to be one thing that's clear this custom domain, this is for use on landing pages. So don't get it confused. Although it'd be very easy to or reasonable. Don't get it confused with this sort of verification for email sender.
  • Um, inside of convert kit, they're actually completely separate beasts altogether. And it's kind of because convert kit offers these almost two very separate services of landing pages and email marketing. They happen to offer it together, uh, which is great. This is why we like them, but I don't want that to confuse you.
  • Um, with these emails, they're separate. Okay. Um, as always, we are here to support you. If you have any questions.
